Chan Master Congyue went to practice with the diligent and self-effacing Chan Master Qingsu. One day, he came to Master Qingsu’s window with a handful of lychees, saying reverently, “Elder, this fruit is from my home province. Please take some.” Qingsu accepted with a sign. “Since my teacher passed away, I haven’t had the chance to eat any of these.”Congyue asked, “Elder, which great master was your late teacher?” Qingsu replied, “Chan Master Ciming. I served under him for thirteen years.” “You must have attained his Way!” said Congyue with admiration, and offered him the rest of his lychees. Qingsu replied, “Because my merit was lacking, my late teacher did not permit me to transmit the teachings. But because you are so devout and gave me these wonderful lychees, I will disregard his directions. Tell me what you have learned from your practice.”
Afterward, Qingsu cautioned Congyue not to mention this to anyone, saying, “Though I have shown you how to attain great liberation, you must not attribute your success to me! Say Zhenjing Kewen is your teacher.”The ancient sages were always ready to reward any kindness. Being obliged to Master Congyue for his gift of lychees, Master Qingsu in turn showed him the mind’s eye.
