有一天，比丘尼玄機，忽然興起一個念頭：「法性湛然，本無來去之相，我這樣厭惡喧嘩而趨於定寂，算是通達法性的人嗎？」於是，他立刻動身往訪雪峰禪師。初見雪峰，雪峰就問：「從什麼地方來？」玄機答：「大日山。」雪峰再問：「太陽出來了沒有？」玄機不甘示弱地回答：「假如太陽出來的話，會把雪峰給融化了。」雪峰見其出語不凡，又問：「你叫什麼名字？」答：「玄機。」雪峰再問：「一天能織多少？」玄機答：「寸絲不掛！」
當玄機禮拜而退，才走了幾步，雪峰說：「你的袈裟拖在地下！」玄機一聽，趕快回頭，雪峰哈哈大笑：「好一個寸絲不掛！」
從兩人的對話，可以看出禪的不同境界，玄機的話是捷辯，而雪峰禪師這句「好一個寸絲不掛」才是禪機！

One day, a thought suddenly occurred to Bhiksuni Xuanji: “Dharma nature is pure and deep. Fundamentally, it has no form of coming and going. Because I loathe noise and am devoted to the tranquility of samadhi, am I not one who fully comprehends the Dharma nature?”
She set off at once to see Chan Master Xuefeng. When he asked where she came from, “Mount Dari,” she replied. The master said, “Has the sun come out yet or not?” Reluctant to show her limitations, Xuanji answered, “If the sun comes out, it will melt the snowy peak.”
Xuefeng thought about her curious response. After asking her name, he said, "How much can you weave in a day?" "Not even a thread!" she replied.
When Xuanji had bowed and taken a few steps back to leave, Xuefeng said, “Your robe is dragging on the ground!” Hearing this, she hastily glanced at the hem of her robe. Xuefeng roared with laughter and said, “Some ‘not even a thread’ you are!”
From this exchange between Xuanji and Xuefeng, we recognize that Xuanji’s words–quick and sharp–were not Chan words. But Master Xuefeng’s witty remark, “Some ‘not even a thread’ you are!”–now, that is fully the spirit of Chan.
