臨濟跟隨老師黃檗一同下田工作，黃檗見臨濟空著手，就說：「你怎麼忘記帶鋤頭呢？」臨濟答：「不知給誰拿走了。」黃檗豎起鋤頭說：「單單是『這個』，就沒有人能拿得動。」臨濟把鋤頭搶過來，說：「老師說誰也拿不動『這個』，現在為何在我手中？」黃檗：「手中有的未必有，手中無的未必無，你說，今天有誰給我們耕田？」臨濟：「耕田的由他耕田，收成的由他收成，關我們何事？」說畢，黃檗轉身就回僧院。
後來，溈山就這件事問仰山：「鋤頭在黃檗手中，為什麼卻被臨濟奪去？」仰山：「強取豪奪雖是小人，可是他的智慧卻在君子之上。」溈山再問：「耕種和收成，臨濟為什麼要說不關己事？」仰山反問：「難道就不能超脫對待關係嗎？」溈山一句話不說，轉身也回到僧院。世人有理話多，無理話更多，若能在真理之前回頭轉身，那不是另有一番世界嗎？

One day, Chan Master Linji followed his teacher, Chan Master Huangbo, down to the fields to work. When Huangbo saw that Linji’s hands were empty, he said, “Did you forget your hoe?” Linji replied, “I don’t know who took it.” Huangbo stood his hoe on the ground and said, “Only ‘this’. No one can move it.” But Linji snatched it from Huangbo and said, “Teacher, you said no one could move ‘this’. Now, why is ‘this’ in my hand?”
Huangbo said, “What is in a hand is not really in a hand, and what is not in a hand is not really not in a hand. Tell me, who will cultivate our fields today?” Linji replied, “Those who cultivate the fields, let them cultivate. Those who harvest the fields, let them harvest. What does this have to do with us?” Hearing this, Huangbo turned away and went back to the monastery.
Chan Master Guishan discussed this incident with Chan Master Yangshan: “The hoe was in Huangbo’s hand. Why was it snatched away by Linji?” Yangshan replied, “Though the one who seized it by force was a petty person, his wisdom was superior to a gentleman’s.”
“Why would Linji say that cultivating and harvesting had nothing to do with them?” asked Guishan. Yangshan replied, “Is it not possible to transcend duality?” Without comment, Guishan turned away and went back to the monastery. Those who know much speak little, and those who know little speak much. Ultimate truth can only be conveyed without words.
