有個小偷，晚上潛進寺裡想偷東西，但翻箱倒櫃都找不到值錢的東西好偷，正準備離去時，睡在床上的無相禪師開口叫道：「喂！這位朋友，既然要走，請順便為我把門關好！」
小偷先是一愣，隨即說：「原來你這麼懶惰，連門都要別人關，難怪你寺裡一點值錢的東西都沒有。」無相禪師說：「你這位朋友太過分了，難道要我老人家每天辛辛苦苦，賺錢買東西來給你偷嗎？」
其實，禪師不是沒有東西，他擁有的是別人偷不去的無盡寶藏。世間上的人只知道聚斂，所以人為財死，心為物累。你有錢了，連小偷都不放過你，不如擁有自家本性裡的無限智慧寶藏，又有什麼人能偷得去呢？

A thief entered a monastery one night, but was disappointed to find nothing of value in the chests and cabinets. He was about to leave when Chan Master Wuxiang awoke and said, “Hey, friend! Close the door for me on your way out!”
The thief was flabbergasted. “How lazy can you be! You won’t even close the door yourself? No wonder there’s nothing worth stealing here.”
Wuxiang replied, “Now you have really gone too far! Do you expect me to work hard so I can buy things for you to steal?”
Those who devote their lives to amassing possessions soon discover they own little worth stealing. But the Chan master who owned nothing possessed a boundless treasure that could never be stolen – the wisdom of his original nature.
