即阿樓陀，是佛陀的堂弟。出家後精進向道，謙和不驕，雖因相貌莊嚴而屢受「女難」考驗，但都不為所動，並且以智慧法水止息對方的欲想。他曾於佛陀說法時酣睡，佛呵責：「咄咄汝好睡，螺螄蚌蛤類，一睡一千年，不聞佛名字。」當下生大慚愧心，從此發奮不眠不休，以致雙眼失明。但他仍精進不懈，並經佛陀教修照明金剛三昧而證得天眼通，成為佛弟子中天眼第一。

Aniruddha, cousin of the Buddha, was humble and diligent after his renunciation. Women frequently tried to seduce him because of his handsome features, but he remained unmoved and even used Dharma wisdom to help relieve their desires. Once, he was caught dozing while the Buddha was teaching the Dharma. The Buddha reprimanded him, saying, “Those who enjoy sleep are like clams: having slept for a thousand years, they missed hearing the name of the Buddha.” Feeling extremely ashamed, he vowed never to sleep again. He became blind from lack of sleep but never lost his diligence. After practicing the Illuminating Vajra Samadhi as taught by the Buddha, he became foremost in possessing the divine eye among the Buddha’s disciples.
