迦旃延的舅舅阿私陀仙人臨命終前，要他禮佛出家。飽學多聞的他，一念慢心起，將舅舅的遺言拋諸腦後。當他面對神祕的碑文，苦苦思索，找不到答案，才想起佛陀。出家後，勤行不懈。他善於分析法義，辯才無礙，曾教導貧苦無依的老婦以布施賣貧，並以智慧感化嗜殺僧人的琉璃王，於佛弟子中有論議第一之稱。

When Katyayana’s uncle, Asita was about to die, he asked Katyayana to renounce and follow the Buddha. However, the scholarly and knowledgeable Katyayana was arrogant and ignored his uncle’s last wish. He only turned to the Buddha when he was baffled by some mysterious inscriptions. After renouncing, he practiced diligently and became skilled in analyzing the Dharma and debating. He once taught a poor elderly woman to avoid poverty by practicing generosity and utilized his wisdom to stop King Virudhaka from killing monks. Katyayana was foremost in debating among the Buddha’s disciples.
