At Vulture Peak, the Buddha picked up a flower, and the assembly was silent. Only Mahakasyapa broke into a broad quiet smile. This marked the beginning of the Chan school. Venerable Master Hsing Yun, founder of Fo Guang Shan, remarked, “Chan is humorous, expresses the law of nature, describes our mind, and reveals our true nature; Chan is the foundation of Humanistic Buddhism.”
The 40 reliefs, lying the outer walls of the Buddha Museum Bodhi Wisdom Concourse, were drafted by Gao Ertai and his wife Pu Xiaoyu based on Hsing Yun’s Chan Talks. The high reliefs feature lifelike characters that best express the spirit of Chan.
